Fulfilled Fridays 9 and Link up

I am so extraordinarily blessed.

I get to be a stay at home mom while my husband works hard to financially support us.

This week he has continued on his quest to be a plumber. Right now he is an apprentice aka “the help”.

That means he does the digging and a lot of the heavy manual labor so the licensed journeymen plumbers don’t have to.

This week he hand-dug two giant holes. The first one was six feet long, four feet wide, and five and a half feet deep. The second one was five feet long, three feet wide, and four feet deep.

As he started both dig jobs, he realized he wasn’t digging through normal dirt. He was digging through compacted gravel. Hard ground. And it wasn’t easy.

Slowly, he is coming to the realization that his 33 year old body cannot easily do what he could at 20. This week was a hard jolt of reality.

He hurts, he aches, every muscle in his body is complaining. Yet he continues to get up each morning and go to work. I do what I can, massaging muscles and taking care of things around the house. It feels like my efforts are small compared to his.

As I sit here at my desk on a Thursday night typing this post, getting it ready for you to read and share Friday morning, I’m listening to him sleep. I’m close to tears and overwhelmed in thankfulness.

He willing puts himself in physical agaony day after day. Not because he loves his job, not because he grew up dreaming of being a plumber, not because he enjoys stressing his body to the point of pain, but for one reason only.

He loves me.

And for that I will always be blessed, I will always be thankful, and I will always be fulfilled. Because how can I complain about what I have knowing what it took to selflessly give it to me?

I hear you. I asked my husband not too long ago if he would ever want it the other way around, where I was out “digging the holes” and he was at home with the kids. He said, no. He loves what he does. It’s exhausting and frustrating some days, but it’s exactly where he knows he should be and he really does enjoy the work.
    Excellent post!
